Nigerian Polytechnic Lecturers Threaten to Join ASUU On Strike: According to a report by SaharaReporters, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the umbrella body of polytechnic lecturers in Nigeria, has said that the one-month ultimatum it issued to the government will expire next Wednesday.

If the Nigerian government does not satisfy the union’s demands, all polytechnics in the country would be closed.

In March, the ASUP National Executive Council issued a one-month ultimatum to the government at its 102 meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The ASUP Zone C, which includes the South West area and Kwara State, held an emergency congress on Thursday in Ogun State, insisting that the Nigerian government meet its requests before the deadline expires.

Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the government, ASUP’s 61-day strike was called off on June 10, 2021, according to the Zonal Coordinator, Yekini Asafe.

Asafe stated that if the government fails to accept the union’s requests, the union may be obliged to resume the strike that had been put on hold.

According to him, the union’s NEC meeting slated for May 4 in Abuja would decide whether or not to restart the strike action.

Non-release of the sector’s revitalisation funds, non-release of arrears of the new minimum wage, and non-release of the revised nomination tools for institutions and management are among the union’s issues with the government.

On February 14, 2022, the polytechnic lecturers’ university colleagues, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), began a one-month warning strike. It extended the strike for another two months after it expired due to the government’s failure to honor its commitments.

Activities have been grounded in Nigerian public universities since then as students wait for the strike to be called off.
