Captain Sir Thomas Moore widely known as “Captain Tom”, was a British Army officer and centenarian. Captain Tom known was known for his achievements raising money for charity in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic. He lived through 30 April 1920 and 2 February 2021. He served in India, the Burma campaign during World War II, and afterwards became an instructor in armoured warfare. After the war, he worked as managing director of a concrete company and was an avid motorcycle racer.

Captain Sir Thomas Moore was born in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire England, on 30 April 1920 and grew up in the town. His father, Wilfred, was one of a family of builders, and his mother was a head teacher. Sir Moore was educated at Keighley Grammar School and started an apprenticeship in civil engineering. Tom Moore left this world on the 2nd day of February 2021 (aged 100) Bedford, Bedfordshire, England after he was reported to have suffered from COVID-19 complicated by pneumonia. His spouse include: Billie (married 1949, divorced); Pamela (married 1968; died 2006); he has two children according to records: Hannah Ingram-Moore and Lucy Teixeira.

He was a British Army Officer who served in India, the Burma campaign during World War II, and later became an instructor in armoured warfare. His rank include: Captain, Honorary Colonel, Army Foundation College (from April 2020). He received the following awards: Pride of Britain, Yorkshire Regiment Medal, Knight Bachelor. He also received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award at the 2020 ceremony. Tom Moore performed in a cover version of the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” originally released by Michael Ball, with proceeds going to his charity foundation “NHS Charities Together”. The single topped the UK music charts, making him the oldest person to achieve a UK number one.

Captain Sir Tom Moore was educated at Keighley Grammar School. Later he started an apprenticeship in civil engineering.
Moore has cornucopia of achievements linked to his name. He held two Guinness World Records: (1) as the fundraiser raising the greatest amount of money in an individual charity walk, and (2) as the oldest person to have a number-one single on the UK charts. We have mentioned above that Sir Thomas Moore is the the oldest person to achieve a UK number one after his cover of the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” originally released by Michael Ball top UK charts.
Also in November 2020, British GQ magazine named Moore its “Inspiration of the Year” as part of its Men of the Year edition. Tom Moore as well appeared on the front cover of the magazine, making him the oldest cover star in the magazine’s history. He was among the army officers who fought and survived the following battles/wars: (1) World War II (2) Burma Campaign (3) Battle of Ramree Island.
Sir Thomas was also named a “Point of Light” by the Prime Minister. In early May 2020 during his 100th birthday anniversary, he was awarded the highest accolade issued by the BBC Television children’s programme “gold Blue Peter badge”. Also on 12 May 2020, he was granted the Freedom of the City of London. He received the following medals: Knight Bachelor, 1939–1945 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939–1945.
We may not be able to note all his achievements, but be in the know that as a legend, Tom made numerous heroic efforts which were recognized by the UK Government and others. Brigadier Andrew Jackson, Colonel of the Yorkshire Regiment, noted that Captain Tom is still an inspiration for Yorkshire soldiers till today.
On the morning of his hundredth birthday the total raised by his walk passed £30 million, and by the time the campaign closed at the end of that day had increased to over £32.79 million (worth almost £39 million with expected tax rebates).
Social Life, Career & Hobbies:
Aside his Military career, records have it that after Sir Thomas Moore lft the army, he worked as a sales manager for a roofing materials company in Yorkshire, and afterwards as managing director of a Fens-based company manufacturing concrete Called Concrete Products Ltd., which was renamed March Concrete Products Ltd. after he led a management buyout in 1983. The company was sold to ARC in 1987.
It’s well recorded that Sir Tom Moore raced motorcycles competitively – he purchased his first when he was 12 years of age and wore the number 23. Captain Tom rode a Scott motorcycle, winning several trophies. Moore was a member of the Keighley and District Photographic Association between 1934 and 1936, as his father had also been. Sir Thomas was a contestant in the Christmas Day 1983 edition of the BBC Television game show Blankety Blank.
