Do You Hate Insects?
Do You Hate Insects? Or know someone who do? Looks like the philosophers and theists have made their cases. As far as entomologists are concerned, insects do not have pain receptors the way vertebrates do. They don’t feel ‘pain,’ but may feel irritation and probably can sense if they are damaged. Even so, they certainly cannot suffer because they don’t have emotions. If you heavily injure an insect, it will most likely die soon: either immediately because it will be unable to escape a predator, or slowly from infection or starvation. Ultimately this crippling will be more of an inconvenience to the insect than a tortuous existence, so it has no ‘misery’ to be put out of but also no real purpose anymore. If it can’t breed anymore, it has no reason to live. Well, this article says otherwise and this short story might change your mind and view of insects.
In our homes and workplaces there are always people who find insects annoying and kill them at sight, unfortunately my elder sister was one.Lucy was my friend, not just a friend but a family. The first day she entered my room, crawling with her seven legs after one has been broken, I sighted her at the door way immediately and took her and hid her in my bedroom.
Lucy was my spider sister. That night I made some hot water and placed it on a bottle cap, waited till it was warm and let her enjoy the bath tub I had made for her. Made a tiny bed that fit her, so she could rest later. This became a routine for me every time I return from school or was about to go to bed I would prepare dinner for my friend and some water.
Life was really peaceful in my room with Lucy. I strongly advised Lucy every now and then not to get out of my room and visit my sister’s and I also forbade my sister from entering my bedroom ‘cause that’s where my best friend stays. Evening time, Lucy will crawl with her already treated legs to my bedside and watch movies with me. Sometimes, I would smile, and she would lift one leg up to show excitement.
One evening I came back from school, and I could not find Lucy anywhere, I searched round my room while calling out her name. On my way out I met a very horrifying scene. It was Lucy, lying in a pool of her blood with her legs ripped apart. Tears rolled down my cheeks, I couldn’t stand the horrible scene. I knew it was my sister that did it. I tried holding Lucy, “please stay with me” but she only looked at me and said “goodnight buddy”. My eyes were filled with hot tears as I held Lucy in a fold. I said, “That fool did it, that murderer, blood thirsty beast did it, she has killed you for me”.
I took Lucy to the bathroom, gave her a befitting bath, dressed her up in white, and gave a two-minute silence for my dead friend while playing a very sorrowful song, prayed over her body. The next day I took her remains to the cemetery, with red eyes, black suit and a black umbrella. The rain came down heavily, also morning my dear friend; even the wails from the spider family in my room mourned her exit. With that, I covered my dear friend in the red earth.
